The tem “Popular” has a mixed response among people. Some of us long to become famous and be asked for an autograph when in the crowd. We envy the number of followers that our film stars have in social media.
But being popular is not something that everybody prefers. Some of us are recluses.
The crux is that anything in moderation is good. It is ok to be famous once in a while and bathe in stardom. It may not cause any harm.
Now, let’s see some related vocabulary.
Du jour | Great fame but short lived |
voguish | Popular [ it has time associated with it] |
Take by storm | Rise to fame within a group |
Shot to fame | Become famous suddenly |
Do not forget that it is the delivery that is going to fetch you marks and not the content. So you are allowed to make up a story. Be careful of the words you use and the way you pronounce. For example, if you are asked to talk about a popular sport in your country and you know only chess. Try to think of all the words related to the game. Then recall the words related to its popularity and derive a meaningful talk. Make sure you answer all the question prompts.
Strategic thinking will help you a long way in scoring a high band. If you understand the assessment criteria and use the 1 minute preparation time productively, you will score nothing less than a band 9.
Of course, good homework is needed. When you prepare for IELTS Speaking, do spend some time learning vocabulary.
