Meaning: 

• become similar to one’s environment
• take up mentally | absorb, ingest, take in (knowledge, beliefs, skills)

Example:

• For IELTS Writing:
  Many new immigrants have not yet assimilated fully into the new community.   (=adjust, accommodate)
