Describe a foreign language you want to learn (except English)
You should say:
- what the language is
- where it is spoken
- what you think would be difficult
- and explain why you would like to learn it.
Sample Answer 1
- what the language is
A language that I would like to learn apart from English is French.
- where it is spoken
There are numerous reasons for this. The most important one is that I want to visit my uncle and aunt who reside in France.
- what you think would be difficult
When I communicated my wish to them, they informed me that it was essential to know some French if I wished to communicate with Francophones as very few people know English. Also, my aunt has offered to sponsor my fees for higher education if I decide to study in France. In such a case, if I choose to study there, then learning the language would be a prerequisite. Another reason is that my parents are deciding to move to Canada. So, my knowledge of French would come in very handy there. Moreover, it may help me in getting a job.
- and explain why you would like to learn it.
French is spoken in more than 33 countries. French is the second most commonly taught language after English. Furthermore, in my country, if I know a foreign language, I can get an excellent job in the tourism industry. Everyone knows that tourists from all parts of the world flock to India. Those who are multilingual stand a better chance in the job market.
Although I don’t think learning the language will be difficult if I am determined enough and practise it regularly, finding an institution or someone who will assist me in learning it appropriately might be challenging.

- what the language is
- where it is spoken
It would probably be French. This language holds great attraction for me, probably because it’s the language of love, and I LOVE the sound of French.
- what you think would be difficult
However, as far as I know, there are many things about this language that frustrates a Vietnamese person. For example, French has a very different system of sounds, grammar and vocabulary, making it very hard for us to get correct pronunciation, remember words and form sentences.
- and explain why you would like to learn it.
I think I’m going to struggle at first but with some persistence I will get past the most difficult period. After that everything would gradually become easier. Especially when you start to understand movies or articles in a new language, you have this huge sense of achievement and that moves you forward even faster.
So my advice for anyone who struggles to learn a new skill is, invest a lot of efforts at the start; the moment you get the hang of something you’ll be motivated and just keep going from there.
