Food is one of the most basic necessities of a human being and the demand for food on a global scale has invariably been following an upwards trajectory for the past few years. Although there are various facets to this issue, the demand for food as a commodity is always reaching new heights to the point where it leads to a crisis and mass hunger in some cases. In the following essay, I will discuss the questions posed by the given topic regarding the causes and possible solutions to this issue.

When probing for causes for this surge in demand for food worldwide, an obvious reason that any rational individual can deduce is overpopulation. It is a very simple fact that more people will require more food and with the global population standing strong at 7.8 billion, it is quite evident that it is the primary reason for this increase in the worldwide demand for food. Although improving living standards is not a negative issue in itself, it has also been a catalyst in expanding food demand worldwide. Since the standard income of people from countries such as China, India, and Brazil has increased in the past few years, the demand for better living conditions, including better food and meals, has also grown. The rapidly escalating population and more disposable income can be deemed the root causes for the increase in demand for food worldwide.

Although the answer to this problem can be to produce more food, the solution is not as black and white as it may sound. Efforts from the international community alone will not suffice in curbing this rise in demand for food. Efforts from governments and other interest groups are also necessary. Governments should focus more on the agricultural sector and allocate more resources to improve the food industry and research and development of better farming and food production techniques.

I would like to conclude by saying that the causes behind the increasing demand for food are multifaceted and diverse, just like the intensity and seriousness of the issue is varied in different regions of the world, with the principal cause being overpopulation. This demand for food can only be met by increasing the food production itself, which can be achieved when the agricultural and other food-related sectors and industries are invested in and improved upon.
