Nowadays, many think everyone should have free access to the internet. However, I believe that internet access shouldn’t be regarded as a right, but should be charged. The following paragraphs provide an explanation of both views.

Various reasons have made the internet a necessity in today’s world. With no internet access, it is nearly impossible to manage both your personal and professional life. Online portals enable access to a variety of services from education to utilities to financial services from almost anywhere. Since everyone is working/studying from home due to the current covid situation, internet usage is a critical component of their lives. Therefore, users’ access to the internet should be considered one of their fundamental rights and people should have unhindered access to it.

On the contrary, when something is free, its quality is affected for obvious reasons. Internet service must be fast and available at all times for things to run smoothly. Further, cybercriminal activity and hacking are on the rise these days. In public places, people usually do not connect to free wifi because they know it cannot be trusted. Secure connections to the internet are therefore essential. Moreover, internet usage is very wide and common nowadays, which makes it a reliable source of revenue for the government.

Despite the fact that the internet is a necessity, I believe it should not be free and should be paid for like other services. Revenue generated from this sector is huge and could be used for further development.
