Sample Essay

Art has been one of the constants of humanity right from its inception. However, there are arguments that trivialize it, arguing against it being taught in schools and academia. This essay will try to understand whether students benefit from learning art or should other subjects be formalized.

Art has been almost synonymous with humanity’s survival – accounts like cave paintings give us a glimpse of how humans tackled the hardships of their time, how they hunted, how they lived. Cave paintings are just one of the many different facets of art, which is still a revered topic in and around the world.

Art has been credited with the cognitive development of a child. Abstract thinking is another aspect that is improved when exposed to art. This is because art is equivocal. An individual can have one interpretation of a painting that is unique to him only. This helps an individual to grow not just cognitively but holistically as well. And, when children are made to learn art in schools, they not only are disposed to develop an affinity towards the subject but also polish their thinking.

Art indeed is important, almost as equivocal to other subjects like maths, sciences, or languages. Some might argue that the latter subjects need to be given preference as they are the ones that “make a difference”, but I feel that students should be taught art along with these subjects as it can not only expand one’s thought processes but can also be taken up as a hobby or a relaxation activity as other things in life can be stressful.

Meaning – the environment or community concerned with the pursuit of research, education, and scholarship.
Example – It is said that if you wish to gauge the capabilities of a country, have a look at its academia.

• Formalized 

Meaning – give a definite structure or shape to.
Example – Formalized thoughts are very hard to get by as one needs to assert control over his own thinking.

• Synonymous  

Meaning – having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or phrase in the same language.
Example – Aggression is often synonymous with violence and harm.

• Glimpse 

Meaning – a momentary or partial view.
Example – Expo 2020 in Dubai is just a glimpse of what the future holds.

• Facets

Meaning – one side of something many-sided.
Example – There are numerous facets to this policy implementation.

• Revered 

Meaning – feel deep respect or admiration for (something).
Example – Sachin Tendulkar is revered as the “God of Cricket” across the cricket fraternity.

• Equivocal 

Meaning – open to more than one interpretation.
Example – Abstract art is in fashion these days because it is extremely equivocal.

• Abstract  

Meaning – existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence.
Example – Abstract concepts are really beautiful as they can have so many different interpretations.
