The IELTS Academic test is designed to assess the language proficiency needed for academic purposes, such as attending university or professional registration. You can take the exam on paper or on a computer at our designated testing locations. It is also available in online format.
Since you all have an idea about the IELTS General, let’s look at what IELTS Academic is all about.
Overview of the IELTS Academic Exam
The duration for the IELTS Academic exam, same as the IELTS General, is 2 hours and 45 minutes. It is usually taken by individuals who plan to migrate to a foreign country for:
- Studying at an undergraduate or postgraduate level anywhere in the world.
- Working in an English-speaking country for a professional organization.
The IELTS Academic test evaluates four key language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. While the Listening and Speaking modules are the same in both IELTS Academic exam and General Training, the Writing and Reading modules are somewhat different in format and vocabulary.
Below are more details about these sections.
Listening
The IELTS Listening Academic test has four sections with ten questions in each. The duration of this module is 30 minutes with additional 10 minutes for transferring answers if you are taking the paper-based exam.
Section | Details |
---|---|
1 | A conversation between two people (for example, a conversation about hotel booking or lodging a complaint). |
2 | A monologue set in an everyday social context (for example, a speech on travel plans or exhibitions). |
3 | A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context (for example, discussions between 2 students about course details or a discussion with a tutor or professor on projects). |
4 | A monologue on an academic subject (for example, a university lecture). |
The recordings will only be played to you once and you will hear various accents, such as British, Australian, New Zealand, and North American.
The answers to the questions are presented in the same order as the information in the recording, thus the first question’s answer will come before the second question’s answer, and so on.
When filling out the answer sheet, you should take care because incorrect spelling and grammar will result in a mark deduction.
Reading
The IELTS Academic Reading section includes three long texts extracted from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers which comprises around 2150–2750 words.
You will get 60 minutes to answer 40 questions in total for the IELTS Reading . No extra time will be provided to transfer answers like in the Listening section. Every right answer is worth one mark.
The text provided in this section can be narrative, descriptive, or discursive/ argumentative and might also have illustrations, graphs, and diagrams. A glossary with easy dictionary definition is given for any technical vocabulary used in the text.
Writing
There are two compulsory tasks in IELTS Writing of the IELTS Academic exam.
- Task 1 of Writing IELTS Academic requires you to use your own words to describe a graph, table, chart, or other visual information. You have to write at least 150 words in 20 minutes for this task.
- In Task 2, you will be given an essay topic to share your point of view, discuss an argument, or explain an issue and list solutions. For this, you have to write at least 250 words and have 40 minutes to complete it.
The answers should be written in complete sentences and not in bullets or notes. On the question paper, you are free to jot down notes; however, the examiner will not see them.
Speaking
The IELTS Speaking of the IELTS exam consists of a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner and is divided into three parts: introduction and interview, long turn, and discussion.
It takes 12-14 minutes and assesses your ability to communicate effectively in English.
- IELTS Speaking Part 1: You will be asked a few questions about yourself, your family and family history, your studies, and your interests.
- IELTS Speaking Part 2: The second part involves you talking about a particular topic after receiving a card. You must speak for up to two minutes on the topic after preparing for one minute.
- IELTS Speaking Part 3: The examiner asks further questions which are connected to the topic of Part 2.
